HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
PAI began its operations in October 1993 at Route Abattoir, Vacoas Mauritius. The strategy of the company was formulated based on the belief that Italians enjoy consuming Italian foods even when they are outside of Italy. PAI thus began operating as an importer of food products from Italy and distributor to hotels.
PAI started by importing some ten products (delicatessen, wine tomatoes and pasta among others). Four employees were recruited and two vehicles purchased to distribute the products throughout the island. At that time, the main source of food products was Italy while the number of clients was around ten to fifteen hotels only.
In 1995, PAI began expanding and diversifying its range of products to include more high quality food products such as mineral water, olives, olive oil and meat products. Furthermore, to ensure the highest quality of the products range, PAI entered into contractual agreements with multinationals and top shops in France, South Africa, Australia, Spain and Germany among others. Twelve years after, PAI has managed to grab additional market share by broadening its products range, which is estimated to comprise some 500 types of food products. The company supplies all hotels in Mauritius as well as some supermarkets.
PAI has also diversified its sources of supply to include France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Dubai, Australia, South Africa, India and Arab countries among others. According to management, more and more emphasis is being laid on importing food products of the highest quality. This is viewed as a pre-requisite given the world-class hotels comprising its client portfolio.
PAI is determined to increase its range of products further while laying more emphasis on high quality food products. The strategy of the company is to find new source markets and new top quality products to maintain competitiveness. PAI is also waiting for the green light (pending administrative procedures) to import food products from China.
In its quest to expand its operations, the company has construct a brand new warehouse. The new facilities are expected to help PAI achieve its long term goal of doubling the types of products being imported. The company is also planning, in the medium to longer terms, to enter the retail market, given the rapidly changing retail landscape of Mauritius.
